Bontoc is the capital of the Mountain Province. Located 146 km above Baguio and 396 km north of Manila, the village rises to an altitude of 870 m and is divided in two by the winding Chico River, which irrigates the surrounding land. Bontoc is the land of the Igorots, better known in the region as the head-choppers. This frightening tradition has now disappeared under pressure from the church and government. Their traditional life and their numerous rituals are amply detailed in the very interesting museum of Bontoc. The town is the starting point for the village of Sagada, the hot springs of Mainit and for expeditions to Kalinga and Apayao country. The road, very steep, crosses a luxuriant vegetation and superb rice fields.
