PARQUE NACIONAL DA CHAPADA DOS GUIMARÃES
National park offering guided tours of many important sites and spectacular environments
The National Park offers a wide range of spectacular sites and environments, all of which you can discover and understand with the help of a guide. Among the park's most important sites are :
La Casa de Pedra, a cave overlooking a small stream. You can visit it on the "Waterfalls" hike or on the ascent of Morro Jérônimo (with guide).
Morro Jérônimo, 857 m high. To be visited with an accredited guide (private access), and for hiking enthusiasts only, as the excursion can quickly prove tiring. It's almost 20 km round trip. The climb is pretty tough. Bring plenty of water and food. At the end, the view is a reward in itself!
The Cidade de Piedra is made up of beautiful reddish rock formations eaten away by vegetation. Accessible with the services of a guide and a short, easy walk, this magnificent viewpoint is well worth a visit.
The Veil of the Bride Falls (Veú de Noiva), 85 m high. This is one of the park's mythical viewpoints (very easy to get to, can be visited independently). If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of majestic macaws. Small kiosk at the entrance.
Lagoa azul, a turquoise-water lake 40 km from the village. Access by public transport (shuttle service), on foot (for the more motivated) or with a guide. Admission R$65 (excluding guided service). The sun illuminates the cave in the early afternoon (around 2 p.m.), making it an ideal time to visit. Swimming is not permitted.
The Mirante (viewpoint) is a vast plateau from which the view embraces the entire valley: Cuiabá and, beyond, the Pantanal. The panorama is 200 km wide. This is the location of South America's geodetic center, officially marked by a small stone milestone. The Mirante is a regular gathering place for local mystics, who come to commune in large circles, hand in hand, with the energy of the cosmos, which some say is particularly perceptible here.
When to visit? The park is open all year round, but the best season is the Brazilian summer (i.e., our winter). Visitors can then enjoy the freshness of the rivers and waterfalls and, above all, the magnificent horizon from the Mirante will not be altered by the mists, frequent in winter. Rains are heavy from December to March, while the heat is oppressive and the risk of fire high from July to October.
