A small town 100 km from Cuiabà, nicknamed "the pink city", Poconé is one of the three main gateways to the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. It is here that the Transpantaneira begins, a road that was originally intended to cross the Pantanal to Corumbá, but which, for technical and ecological reasons, covers only 145 km and stops at Porto Jofre. It is the only road, thanks to its 122 bridges, that goes into the heart of the Pantanal. At the end of May, the Dança dos Mascarados marks the end of the Espirito Santo celebrations. It is a spectacular dance, performed by masked men dressed in flamboyant costumes, half dressed as men, half as women.
