The village of Alcântara is located on the mainland, opposite the island of São Luís. The crossing of the bay of São Marcos is done by boat. Founded in 1648 on the site of a Tupinambá village, Alcântara was for a long time the residence of the landed aristocracy of Maranhão. Despite its production of sugar cane, cotton and rice, the rise of São Luís led to its decline in the 19th century, a decline accelerated by the abolition of slavery in 1888. This sleepy city has preserved its architectural heritage and its rhythm of life. The vestiges of the opulence of the empire are imprinted on the ruins of the palaces and mansions scattered around the village
