PELOURINHO Y RUÍNAS DA IGREJA DE SÃO MATIAS
Colonial vestige reconstituted near the ruins of the Igreja São Matias, built in the century
Alcântara's church square is home to the last of the piloris where recalcitrant slaves were once punished. After the abolition of slavery in Brazil, almost all the pillories were destroyed. This one has survived to the present day. The three parts of the pelourinho were buried by three freed slaves. One of them revealed the location. This vestige of colonial times has been reconstructed next to the ruins of the Igreja São Matias, built in the 17th century.
