Porto Seguro is certainly known as the birthplace of the lambada, but it is above all the place where the Portuguese discoverers landed in Brazil. The stele commemorating the feat of Pedro Álvares Cabral - Portuguese navigator considered the "discoverer of Brazil" who anchored here on April 23, 1500, a month and a half after leaving Lisbon, continuing the work of Vasco da Gama - is a little worn and almost illegible. It has been protected from the weather and from visitors by enclosing it in a glass cage protected by barriers.
