Porto Seguro is the cradle of Brazil. It was here that Pedro Alvares Cabral and the Portuguese expedition he commanded landed on 22 April 1500. Having left Europe to reach the Indies, Cabral discovered, in the absence of a new land, a new continent, which would become Brazil. A marble column was erected three years later in the place that would become the upper town of Porto Seguro, to immortalize the event. A fort and church were built, the Tupiniquin Indians, who populated the area, were enslaved and converted, while the Pataros Indians - whose descendants can be seen further south - resisted the invaders.500 years later, Porto Seguro is one of the main tourist destinations in Brazil. Tourists from Carioca and Paulista flock there, not so much for the cultural and historical heritage, but for the beauty of the beaches and the crazy nightlife. The city center is pleasant. It consists of a succession of small paved streets lined with small colonial style houses, most often transformed into hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops or travel agencies. In the evening, these same streets are full of people. The evening has just begun and the night will be long. As usual, the cachaça will flow and the bodies will sway to the wild rhythms of MPB. During the day, the city empties, compulsory rest on the beach, which extends over tens of kilometers north of the city.
