On the banks of the Huallaga River , a tributary of the Amazon, the capital of the department of Huanuco is a dynamic inter-Andean city, located at an altitude of 1894 meters. Agricultural products such as cascarilla, supposed to fight malaria, coca and coffee ensure a relative prosperity. It is very little visited by the travelers, however Huánuco enjoys a temperate climate all year long (22 °C) and a small breeze blows there in the evening. The city, founded by the conquistador Gomez de Alvaro in 1539, keeps some churches and casonas from the colony. The emblematic dance of the local folklore is that of the Negritos, from the time when African slaves worked in the haciendas. Its main festivity is the Pascua de Reyes, from December 24 to February 15, which is mixed with the carnival. It is a stopover on the way to Tingo Maria and Pucallpa.
