On 24 August 1911, Manuel de Arriaga, an Azores native born in Horta, was elected the first President of the Portuguese Republic. A noble figure of the regime, he is now buried in the National Pantheon in Lisbon. His home, rehabilitated as a house-museum, includes a permanent exhibition, a temporary exhibition room and a library; if you hadn't known this illustrious character until then, you would know him much better at the end of your visit. Casa Manuel de Arriaga, in addition to fixing its memory, projects itself into the substance of its republican values.
