The public garden with its tropical essences is enchanting with its beautiful azalea beds and superb magnolias. You can climb up to the Alto de Memoria, an obelisk erected in honor of King Dom Pedro IV, who lived in Angra during the constitutional struggles. This was the site of the Azores' first fortress, São Luís Castle. The yellow color and quadrangular base reflect the influence of Freemasonry.
