A small uninhabited island accessible from Garden Key, Fort Jefferson Island is home to rare birds that come here to breed.
This small island, with a surface of only 4.5 ha, is home to rare birds that come here to breed. Bush Key is therefore closed to the public for part of the year during the nesting period. But once the birds are gone, visitors are allowed to access this uninhabited island by staying on the marked trails that go around it. Note: Bush Key is accessible from Garden Key, the island of Fort Jefferson. It is possible to get there via a sandy path but it is not always practicable, all depends on its condition which changes with the weather.
