Practical information : Accomodation Miami
Budget & Tips
In high season, it's rare to find hotels for less than US$200 a night. If you're on a budget, you'll want to check out the youth hostels - of which there are around ten in Miami - some of which offer double rooms for greater privacy.
Prices quoted do not include taxes (sales tax, resort tax and tourist tax): add 13% per night. Most hotels also charge a resort fee, which includes pool access, wifi, beach towels and other services.
It's generally more advantageous to book directly on hotel websites rather than on the big booking platforms that charge commissions to hoteliers. However, if you want to leave room for the unexpected and book as you go, there are a number of apps that offer discounted hotel nights for the same evening. The best-known is Hotel Tonight.
To be booked
Over the past few years, accommodation prices in Florida, and particularly in Miami, have soared. Prices are lower between August and November, but soar from mid-December to June. So it's best to book your accommodation from France.
Tip: it's a good idea to check that no major events are taking place during your stay (Miami Boat Show, Art Basel...), unless you absolutely must attend them. Indeed, there's nothing like it to make prices soar (and what's more, it makes getting around the city much more complicated).
What's very local
There are two main room configurations in Miami and the USA in general: two queen-size beds (160 cm) or one king-size bed (180 cm). The vast majority of rooms (regardless of the type of hotel) are equipped with at least a small refrigerator, a microwave and a coffeemaker, which is very practical for keeping food and water cool or for grabbing a bite to eat. Finally, the vast majority of hotels in all categories have an outdoor swimming pool, often heated.
Good to know: in the United States, the first floor corresponds to the first floor, not the second floor.
For food lovers
Very few hotels offer free breakfast in Miami. So you'll always have to pay a supplement. When it is offered, it's rather copious! It often includes an English breakfast-style savory section with eggs or bacon, as well as all kinds of cereals, pastries and cinnamon, pecan or banana cakes.
Good to know: hotel rooms are always equipped with a coffee maker, and sometimes a mini-refrigerator and microwave. So it's easy and economical to make your own breakfast.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited in Florida accommodation (and in public places in general). Some do allow smoking on the balcony, but it's best to ask when you arrive. Tuxedo fees can be very high if you smoke in your room or on the balcony when prohibited by the hotel.
Tourist traps
You shouldn't have any unpleasant surprises, either by using conventional booking platforms or directly on the hotel's website. However, be sure to read guest reviews carefully, especially for hotels on South Beach and Ocean Drive. While they are very popular with tourists thanks to their ideal location and unique Art Deco style, they are often poorly soundproofed and not always very modern.
