It is a mythical address, known to all Romans who come to the historic store behind the San Giovanni gate to taste the specialty: tiramisù. At Pompi's, they prepare it with coffee, of course, but also with banana, strawberry, pistachio or walnut. Purists might cringe and cry heresy, but it's not. Whether you prefer the classic or the twist, Pompi's tiramisù is simply excellent. Other stores in Rome, including one near Piazza di Spagna and one near the Trevi Fountain.

In the Esquilino district, this artisan pastry shop with its delightfully old-fashioned façade opened in 1916 and has been run by the same family ever since. You have to look hard to find this tiny pastry shop, whose front is hard to notice, between Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. But it is well worth the detour. Everything is homemade, of course, and the choice is always varied. This pasticceria offers a cafeteria service to accompany the pastries with a drink.
