This deep valley, where a hydroelectric power station is located, is an inviting place to stroll. This is the only place in the world where the Madeira Petrel (Pterodroma madeira) nests. Also noteworthy are two enormous lime trees (ocotea foetens) several hundred years old, shortly after the power station. A hike for experienced hikers starts just before the power station and partly follows the Levada do Pico Ruivo (3 hours, 9.7 km). Numerous unsecured tunnels and exposed passageways. Check trail conditions before you set out.
