The white houses of this peaceful village are scattered on two green-covered rocky plateaus dominated by an imperious pebble, the "Rocher de l'Aigle". Faial owes its name to the profusion of beech trees that grew on these lands. The village fort was a simple strategic point to watch over the surroundings. The esplanade provides beautiful views of the surrounding area, over the lombos and arcos, the crests and the gorges of the mountains. At the foot of the village, there is a natural swimming pool wedged between two rocky promontories. Climbing the 590 m of the "Eagle Rock" (Penha d'Aguia) is a challenge! The view, at the top, is majestic (4 km round trip, 2h30)
