STUDENT RESIDENCE
A student residence dating back to 1910, one of Europe's most dynamic centers of creativity and exchange, it hosts a wide range of exhibitions
When it was founded on October 10, 1910, the residence was home to 15 students; by 1912 it had already grown to 50. By 1920, it was home to Federico García Lorca, Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. Poet Juan Ramón Jiménez organized the garden and christened it Poplar Hill. Lorca's theater group, La Barraca, performs here. Luis Buñuel comments on the films shown and presents the exclusive Un chien andalou to his friends. Miguel de Unamuno (philosopher) settled here on each of his trips to Madrid. In 1933, Calder came to present his miniature circus show with wire sculptures. It was one of the most dynamic centers of creation and exchange in Europe between the wars. Andrés Segovia, Manuel de Falla, Maurice Ravel and Francis Poulenc all gave concerts here. Valle-Inclán (playwright), Ortega y Gasset (philosopher), Henri Bergson, Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, H. G. Wells, J.-M. Keynes gave lectures. Today, the residence is still in operation, hosting free meetings, exhibitions and concerts. The place has retained all its charm, and its garden is an unspoilt haven of peace just a stone's throw from the Castellana. Sixty rooms are available for guests from the worlds of culture, science and the arts. A cafeteria and restaurant are open to residents and visitors alike. Exhibitions, conferences and concerts are open to the general public.
