MONUMENTO A LOS CAIDOS POR ESPAÑA
Previously called Obelisco or Monumento a los Héroes del Dos de Mayo, this monument opened in 1840 honours the memory of the resistance fighters who were shot on 2 May 1808 by the Napoleonic army. It lies at the very location of execution ordered by Murat. A sarcophagus with the insurgents'ashes lies in the base of the monument on its west face. The allegories of Virtue, Courage, Constance and Patriotism are represented. The obelisk is 56 m high. Since 1985, this memorial is dedicated to all deaths for the Spanish homeland.
