This charmless village is one of the most important on the Karpas peninsula. It boasts several looted and abandoned Byzantine churches, a tourist office (opening hours vary) and numerous shops. On the coast, you'll find beautiful rock formations, a Venetian tower, three public beaches lined with vacation home developments and the Karpaz Gate Marina, the largest marina in the northern zone. Inland, 4 km to the east, at Agia Trias/Sipahi, the site of the Agia Triada basilica (open at random) is home to superb 6th-century mosaics. The name Gialousa is derived from the term aigialos/αἰγιαλός, meaning "beach" or "shore". Counting only Greek Cypriots before 1974 (2,460 inhabitants), the village had a courthouse and a high school. From 1976 onwards, it was repopulated by Turkish Cypriots, mainly from the Kokkina/Erenköy enclave region, and took the name of "new Erenköy".
