In 1987, when the Reagan administration refused to address the problem, 3,400 San Franciscans took to the streets to raise public awareness about AIDS, the new disease that was taking a terrible toll on the gay community. Since then, San Franciscans have continued to march every year to raise funds for medical research and associations that support patients with the virus. This solidarity movement has raised over 90 million dollars to date.
