Old hotel but still in a good state. I can read lots of negative comments which are quite understandable but for the room price I think you get a decent room, cleanliness and comfort.

I had a shared bathroom/shower which is a bit of a pain but I never had any issues with it being occupied or not clean enough. You just have to get out of the room and that is the only catch!

One thing to know, is you have to go to Stratford hotel to get checked-in as there is no concierge at all! This can be bad as there ae several homeless who can sleep on the front of the door, as it is somehow like a small shelter, which can be a bit intimidating. Door is safe though, as it only opens with a key fob.

There is a Walgreens market next to the hotel, which is open until 10am. Something really useful if you want to save some money.

Bathroom door frame leaked from water supply pipe upstairs. Probably around 1 litre of water dripped through over the week I was there. What’s worse is that it was obvious this leak has been there for months because of the way that the door and flooring have swollen and the tile is recessed where the drip lands. Room 609 (Queen room with private bath).

Additionally, no tissue (only toilet paper), no mini fridge, no ice box or ice machine, no towel rack, no iron, no closet shelf, no cabinets/dressers.

It’s fine. Not in a safe area. Rooms are dark and a bit sitinky because of the pidgwons. Otherwise it’s comfy and good enough.

Rooms for a Hostel are not too bad. There is a sink in the room,, ironing board and iron, hair dryer, towels, fridge, small desk and chair, closet, big mirror and a TV. Shower and toilet are shared and you need a key to use them (they are given to you during check in). Room was clean, those are not being cleaned during the stay. There is an elevator, shared kitchen with electric kettle and microwave. Washing machine and dryer that you will need to pay in coins to use. Looks like you will also need your own washing supplies.
Great location! Super close to Bart metro which goes straight to the airport. Very close to restaurants and shops.

A bit grotty but is a must for the single traveller in the heart of San Francisco

Very basic but very clean, bed is comfortable, pretty quiet on the top floor (couldn't hear any street noise).
The room rate is very reasonable, do be aware that you need to check in at the Stratford Hotel half a block up the street, your bed isn't made every day and the bathroom and shower are down the hall.
I would definitely stay again...

It's expensive for what you get.bed was super comfy. It's a bit grotty it's an old hotel but it's not bad. You won't meet many staff to complain so don't bother looking. Excellent location and you'll hear the streetcars . Ting ting ting....all night. 7/10

DO NOT COME HERE AS A SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER. The accommodations were suitable for a 2 star hotel, but I was extremely unsafe. There are unhoused people on the street at all times, but this morning there was a man sleeping at the door so that I physically could not exit (picture attached). He appeared to be sleeping whilst holding a cheese grater. Someone else trying to exit the hotel knocked on the glass to wake him, and the sleeping man began to bang on the glass with the grater and a switchblade, and he aggressively tried to grain entry to the hotel. Me and the other guest had to hide for several minutes before exiting. I called the hotel after the incident to see if there was any way security or a staff member could be present in the lobby in the mornings and evenings, and the response was no, but I could call the police. This evening, I entered the hotel and was met by a man with a walker groaning in agony. I held the door open for him, and he began aggressively demanding I say a prayer for a miracle. I felt extremely unsafe but was pinned by the door and he was blocking the hotel entrance. He proceeded to tell me incoherently that he was dragged out of his room and was now going to the hospital, and his microwave was taken away because it was covered in bugs. I tried to contact the hotel after the incident but did not receive any response. For your safety, splurge on a hotel with security and a lobby.

many reviews say that the herbert hotel is dirty or give the area a bad rep but i do not agree! the area is not bad at all. i picked this place because it’s very cheap for the area! we got the standard room and the bed was comfy, the sheets and room were spotless and we felt safe. i will say that the remote didn’t work for the tv but maybe it was a battery issue. there are buttons on the tv. don’t be alarmed if the bathroom is connected to another room, they cannot access it in the other side. the stratford hotel is where you check in and it’s literally across the street, you’ll be fine. 9 minute walk from SFMOMA! walgreens and cvs are around the corner. the fashion district, coffee shops and bars/good eats are all walking distance! i highly recommend this stay.

This hotel is basically a hostel. Each floor has tiny rooms with a shared bath and shower, and a few with private bathrooms. There is also a lounge on the floor and if anyone is in there talking, or laughing it is heard throughout the hallway through paper thin walls. Lots of school groups and foreign travelers. The street is sketchy with lots of mentally ill homeless people. Also you have to check in at a different hotel down the block and the lobby is not staffed so there is constant threat of homeless getting in and setting up camp in the lounge areas. There is a nearby hostel that would likely be better and cheaper than this dump.

Spend a few dollars more and go somewhere else. The best that can be said about the room was it basic. Had to move rooms because of the state of repair that our room was in.

The hotel staff was rude and combative when simple requests for enough washcloths for each occupant. To resolve the situation, the housekeeping staff brought us a bag with 4 more towels and only one washcloth when all we needed was 2 mire washcloths. After a second call, they returned with 4 more bags full of towels and one hand towel and one washcloth in each. When receiving the bags, I was told that washcloths were not a housekeeping problem.

No management was available after 3 p.m., and when contacted via phone, the manager was uninterested in customer service.

AC is not installed in this building, so summer bookings should be avoided at all costs.

I would not recommend this place to anyone I cared for.

One positive comment is that the cable car stop is very close by and only a couple of vagrants to step over to get there.

Room was fine, good location.
The room next to us was a kitchenette that was supposed to be closed during the night. At 22pm loud voices and TV at max volume. Go there to ask to lower it : surprise! there are 4 homeless there hanging out. Asked them politely, but 10 minutes later they started talking loudly again and was feeling more and more unsafe.

Called the hotel. They said one of them was a resident but will send someone to check. Condescending tone even if I explained how unsafe I feel. Especially that our room don't have a bathroom and have to go in the hallway to access the shared toilet/shower.
If resident why not hang out in their room? If kitchenette supposed to be closed why isn t? How about in the night you want your guest on a safe and quiet environment?

Don't know if they finally send someone but heard them screaming and talking loud for a few hours. With TV back at max volume again.

Far from a good night. Haven't slept.

Be careful, some rooms don't have a bathroom, economic room, select from Standard queen. Rate doesn't include room cleaning, other US$50 per day

I stayed for a week (7 days) and there was no room cleaning. If you want room cleaning, they want you to pay an extra $50 per day.

There is no bathroom or toilet in the room. The bathroom and toilet are shared.

They had baggage claim but they say there is no. They direct you to a paid baggage claim elsewhere.
