Elegant hotel in a building dating from 1906, offering 372 rooms on 16 floors

Housed in a 1906 building, redesigned by renowned designer Philippe Starck in a contemporary Baroque style, the hotel's elegance is unparalleled. Spanning 16 floors, the common areas reveal marvels of contrast in black and white. The 372 guest rooms, decorated in soothing classical tones and furnishings, offer splendid views over Union Square. But the best part is the sublime Redwood Bar, with its 1930s woodwork and paintings by Klimt students.

Great and safe city centre location near Union Square and all the theatres. The room was a good size and the bed was the best!

Had a great experience here. For starters, we showed up about 45 minutes early and they were kind enough to accommodate an early check-in. We had booked an Executive King room and were placed in a high corner room with great views. The room was nice, clean, and had the typical amenities. The staff was all very kind and friendly. Lastly, it was a short, convenient walk to venues like The Warfield, and right down the block from Piedmont Diner (which was great!).

I'm a huge fan of the old Clift because it had the IT factor of style, panache and the design edge lacking in so many cookie cutter in and out blah blah blah.
Although we've only been in one room of the redesign of the cliffs Hotel gone were the lucite tables and the pink lighting and independence factor. Unfortunately the lobby was kind of like the Hilton around the corner and the room was spacious the bathroom was perfect but again the furniture was kind of meh.
The Clift isnt supposed to look like any other Hotel. And it just kind of does now. But all in all it's still one of the best stays in San Francisco.
All the updates took away alot ofthe charm which I am praying somebody in management recognizes and they bring back the big chairs in the lobby and the doorman that used to be so friendly and now they're just kind of average. I would still recommend it above almost any hotel in the neighborhood.

This is a trendy and swanky hotel with a mix of historic furniture and modern elegance. It offers amenities such as a lounge, fitness center, and business center. The rooms feature flat screen TVs, desks, and walk-in showers. The hotel is located near popular attractions and offers private parking and valet services. Overall, it is highly praised for its comfort, ambiance, and service, making it a top choice for luxury accommodation in San Francisco.

We reserved this hotel through Amex platinum hotel collections and so far the experience has been miserable with the check in process with the receptionist called Tony who has been very rude to my wife. I will be contacting Amex to see what are the standards to have hotels as part of their network.
The so called room upgrade for which we had to pay an extra $30 is on the 13th floor with a nice view but nothing to right home about. The amenities in the room is what you would find in a courtyard and the TV is not high def. The mattresses are soft and so are all the pillows.
There is parking on the street but finding one is a challenge. The hotel doesn’t have self parking and valet is $75 a day. The cheapest public parking two blocks away is $43/day.
Location wise it is a few blocks from union square which is nice but if you make the wrong turn and go down two blocks from the hotel, you will run into San Francisco’s unfortunate homeless communities with a lot of drug addicted mixed in. It’s a scary scene.
