Recent winner of 2024 James Beard Foundation America’s Classics Award !!!

Stellar food and atmosphere — whether outside on the parklet terrace or inside in a quaint dining room complete with Buddhist altar.

Tea Leaf Salad, wonderfully funky and satisfyingly crunchy in more than 3 ways. Rainbow Salad, near life changing, with two types of noodles, fried tofu, assorted vegetables, and tubers. Vegetarian samusa, you won’t miss the meat. Chin Mong Jaw, this dish comes with a full-rounded flavor from vegetable ferment. Nan Gyi Dok noodle, savory comfort.

As a meat lover, I found the vegan/vegetarian dishes here to be top-notch. Excellent, friendly and attentive service.

The tea leave salad, samusa soup, spicy sake margarita, and curry beef were incredibly delicious.

I had my best dining experience of 2024 so far at Mandalay. As soon as you walk in, the warmth of the atmosphere is palpable. The decor is festive, with some really thoughtful touches such as vibrant orchids, twinkle lights, and an ornate altar by the front window. (What a breath of fresh air from the sterile minimalism that's rapidly overtaking the city's dining establishments.) Now, the star of the show (the food, that is) is simply to die for. Every dish is bursting with flavors, and each ingredient contributes to a harmonious and balanced meal. The salads, the vegetables, the noodles, I would rate everything simply a ten out of ten. Don't pass this place up!

Delicious! We got the mango salad and the chili tofu. Mango salad was amazing, so delicious and highly recommend. Chili tofu was good too, but not special like the mango salad.
we wanted to split one dish but unfortunately there was a $18 minimum per person, so keep that in mind!

We ordered Burmese style noodle (Kaw Soi Dok), Mandalay Beef. The server offered to order a dish called Amazing Prawn. We ate burmese food before and at various good restaurants. I heard that Mandalay is one of the best burmese. However disappointed. The noodle was ok. In the Amazing Prawn dish, There were just 4 prawns with lots of stir fried vegies and flowers and fancy presentation. Presentation is good when the taste is also good. The prawn just tasted so average. The worst was the Mandalay Beef. It felt as if were eating some deep fried stuff, god knows what. Why? Mandalay Why? I would definitely not recommend Mandaly to anyone.

Amazing, bright, refreshing flavors.

The noodles were cold but not sure if that was to be expected. Would take the lemon coconut chicken to go and then add more meat and heat up.
Wish we ordered the mango chicken instead.
The tea salad was not our favorite but everyone ordered.

This place is catered for a certain demographic. The food was severely lacking in flavor (got the beef curry and wow. Where was the spice?) We ordered 1 chicken curry and 2 beef curry. Time went by and we were missing 1 beef curry, so we brought it to the attention to one of the servers. All of a sudden we were getting ganged up by two other servers saying our order was complete. At one point, one of them was being super condescending and pointed at each dish saying, "THAT'S the chicken and THAT's the beef. Your order is done." We tried to explain that we were missing one beef curry, but they were responding in a way that made it seem like it would be the end of the world if we tried to get that 1 beef curry (so we just left it alone). The servers also just seemed extremely overwhelmed. First and last time coming here for sure.

Holy cow!!!! The food here is INSANELY delicious. I can still taste it in my memories, a week later. The wait was nuts (Fri eve). I so wish they'd take ressies. We ended up eating outside and I was freezing despite the heat lamp, but it was worth it. Also, one of the best service experiences in the city!! Amazingly friendly and knowledgeable wait staff that go so far out of their way to make sure you have a good meal and highly honor food restrictions/preferences. Impressive!!

The food was incredible! I’d come back to try more.

Unfortunately the service was poor with our waitress never checking on our table. I had to ask 4 different people for water until I finally got a refill by literally standing in front of the kitchen until a staff member walked in. If you don’t have time to ensure your customers are topped off then you need to leave a pitcher of water on the table. Refilling water is truly the bare minimum of expected service.

While the food was overall good.... the mango chicken tasted much to sweet(lots of added sugar). Also, the waiter offered my friend and I tea to warm us up, which I assumed was free, but in the end, we were charged 16.00$$$ for tea?!

Really good food. Special noodle and tea salad stood out but everything was great. Funny painting in their bathroom (photo attached).
Service was fine but a little odd sometimes.
They mix the salad and noodles for you at the table, which worked really well for the tea salad but not well for the noodle dish when the noodles occasionally flung sauce on the table. They were also super eager about reclaiming their plates for some reason and asked a couple times if we were done when there was still food on a plate and we were still eating. We suspect they were trying to fill a dishwasher batch or something. Just a bit odd.

Must get: lamb rack, Mandalay special noodles, and chicken curry. The special beef was good too but tasted just like orange chicken (had better ones at Chinese restaurants). Tea leaf salad was mostly peanuts and I personally prefer the ones with more leaf.

We have been regular customers of Mandalay for over 30 years. It has always been one of our favorite San Francisco restaurants due to its YUMMY food served in rather large portions by friendly, helpful staff. It was announced today that they won a James Beard award. I am so glad for them, as they deserve it!

Cozy atmosphere with amazing food! Pretty much every dish we got was a hit. If you’re in SF, definitely have to give the Burmese food scene here a try, and Mandalay is a must! The waiters are very nice and attentive as well.
