A few kilometres away, the SH 45 crosses Okato, built on the banks of the Stony River, near the sea. Okato is famous for fishing, both in the river (protected) and at sea where, incidentally, surfing conditions are excellent. Unfortunately, here the road does not go along the coast, but many trails lead to it, if the heart says it. Many hikes to Mount Taranaki begin on the outskirts of the city. There are also exhibitions of local artists.
