A town of 5,600 souls, Stratford was named after Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare in England. It is said that the Pātea River, which runs through New Zealand's Stratford, resembles the Avon River in England. In any case, the theme is followed to the end, with many streets named after characters from Shakespeare's plays, and a clock tower that comes alive 3 times a day to play the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. This township is at a crossroads, at the foot of Mount Taranaki and at one of the two ends of the Forgotten World Highway. Its Māori name, Whakaahurangi, means "face to the sky"
