Tane Mahuta is a sacred tree whose name means "the lord of the forest" in Maori. This giant kauri is the largest in the country, 51 metres high, a circumference of 14 metres and an estimated age of over 1 200 years. Te Matua Ngahere, "the father of the forest", is number 2, 30 metres high for more than 16 metres of circumference. Older, estimates give him at least 2 000 years.
