Along the beautiful Kauri Coast, the Waipoua Forest is "the forest where it rains at night". This is the heart of the kingdom of the kauri, New Zealand's giant tree. Three quarters of these giants can now only be found here, once covering the whole of Northland before they were exploited by man. The 9,105 hectares of unspoilt nature also boast numerous tree ferns and typical endemic fauna, including kiwis, pupuka and numerous parrots. But nothing is more impressive than the "lord of the forest" itself, the giant Tane Mahuta kauri (51 m high and 14 m in circumference).
