The tiny port of Whangaroa is infamous since thesinking of the Rainbow Warrior. Indeed, the NGO Greenpeace had chartered a boat to protest against French nuclear experiments in the Pacific Ocean and in particular the Mururoa atoll located in the Tuamotu archipelago. This boat, with an ecological mission, was sunk during the night of July 9 to 10, 1985 by the French secret services, before being transported near Cavalli Island. The photographer Fernando Pereira lost his life in this attack. The small fishing village offers beautiful landscapes and a surfing beach at Taupo Bay.
