KIWIRAIL
KiwiRail's rail network offers three train lines operating for tourist purposes in both directions. The cars are modern and practical, with air-conditioning and panoramic windows to make the most of the view. At the rear, there's an even larger viewing area for photos. On-board catering service. The website features an easy-to-use reservation system.
North Island network. From Auckland to Wellington, the Northern Explorer crosses the heart of the North Island in 12 hours, including Ohakune, the National Park area and the volcanic plateaus of Mt Ruapehu. Otorohanga is an interesting stop to visit the famous Waitomo glowworm caves or the Hobbiton site. Once disembarked in Wellington, train enthusiasts can take the ferry to the South Island.
South Island network. The Coastal Pacific runs between Picton and Christchurch, along the Pacific coast and the Kaikoura hills. The landscapes are varied, from wine-growing regions to the Canterbury plains. Kaikoura is a popular stop for whale-watching.
TranzAlpine line. This train runs between Christchurch and Greymouth through the Southern Alps, the Canterbury Plains, the Waimakariri River and Arthurs Pass. The journey ends by crossing the lush rainforest just before Greymouth, an ideal base for visiting the Punakaiki area. The Scenic Coach is a private coach service between Greymouth and Queenstown.
