THE HOUSE OF THE BEATE
An eco-museum with a small lace museum in Les Estables.
In 1938, La Vacheresse lost its last Béate. Since then, the Maison de la Béate has offered visitors a picturesque journey into the past: the main room has been restored with its old-fashioned cage-bed, a china cabinet and period furniture, while the second floor has been transformed into a small lace museum, with tiles and pieces made in different stitches. Specific to the Vellave region, this modest but charming stone house was occupied by a person with an important role in village life: the beate. Living off the generosity of the villagers, she taught catechism to the children and taught them the rudiments of reading and writing. In the evenings, at La Vacheresse as elsewhere, the Béate would gather together a small group of lacemakers. These women would come to work with their "boule de veillée", a glass globe that diffused candlelight around the room, and their foot-warmers, which sometimes held a little coffee that the embers from the oven kept warm.
