Founded on a former royal site at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Mbarara was for a long time a large and dusty town before experiencing a demographic and economic boom over the last twenty years. You can still stop here to experience the atmosphere of a large provincial town, although it has no major tourist attractions to offer. For most visitors, it is the gateway between Kampala and the national parks in the west of the country (Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Mgahinga). It is possible to get supplies and sleep in the road junction that is Mbarara
