Capital of the eponymous district and main city of Kigezi, Kabale remains - with its some fifty thousand inhabitants - a peaceful place and one of the most pleasant towns in the country. Nestled in a lush green valley at an altitude of over 1,800 metres, it boasts several colonial buildings and a vibrant, colourful and commercial main street. Apart from its pleasant atmosphere, the town is not of much interest to tourists, but it is easy to spend a night there before heading to the shores of Lake Bunyonyi. Founded in 1913 by the British, the city is mainly populated by Bakiga.
