APOLLO THEATRE
A legend of black American music, this burlesque theater built in 1913 was initially reserved for whites. From the 1930s onwards, the Apollo became the performance center for black artists and audiences. Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, etc.: all the greats performed here. Amateur nights, reserved for novice artists, saw the debut of James Brown and the Jackson Five. Since February 2024, the museum has included two other stages in the newly renovated Victoria Theater.
