Pulau Besar lies 15 km off the coast of Malacca. It was once a hideout for pirates who plagued the Straits. In the 1990s, property developers decided to invest in this piece of paradise and build a 5-star hotel and golf course. After 3 years in operation, Hindu and Muslim groups succeeded in shutting down the complex. The island is a place of pilgrimage for both communities. It has now been returned to nature, with groups of pilgrims leaving their picnic leftovers behind.
