Mainly inhabited by Wayampi and Emerillon Amerindians, Camopi covers an area of over 10,000 km². Towards the end of 1738, a mission of Notre-Dame-de-Sainte-Foi (of the Jesuit order) was established between Camopi and the Oyapock River, with the aim of evangelizing the inhabitants of this region. They brought with them European diseases, and the missions began to be depopulated. The Jesuits were expelled in 1763, and the surviving populations dispersed. Since 2013, Camopi has no longer been part of the regulated access zone (ZAR) controlled by the Prefecture. The village has thus opened up to tourism.
