BALUARTE DE LA SOLEDAD - MUSEO ARQUITECTURA MAYA
Museum located in the fort of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, known for its presentation of the four Mayan architectural styles
The "Museum of Mayan Architecture" is located in the fort of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, which dates back to the end of the 16th century and which was to become one of the most imposing of the baluartes built during the later fortification of the city since it protected the Puerta de Mar and the landing pier of the port of Campeche. This old museum, which was reopened in 2005, is known for presenting in a very clear manner, with valuable maps and detailed sketches, the four Mayan architectural styles present in the state: Petén Norte (Calamul), Río Bec (Xpujil, Becán, Ríon Bec, Chicanná, Hormiguero etc.), the four Mayan architectural styles of the state, and the four Mayan styles of the city.), Chenes (Santa Rosa Xtampak, Hochob, Trabasqueno, Dzibilnocac, etc.) and Puuc (located along the coastal fringe towards Merida, their remains are not the most impressive in the state). The bias is not to separate the styles as if they were exclusive of each other, which makes for a better understanding of the periods, influences and reciprocal borrowings. To top it all off, the museum contains original stelae, lintels and monoliths from other sites in the region, especially from Calakmul and Edzná. It is therefore a wonderful and indispensable stopover to make before exploring the sites themselves. To enjoy a nice view of the city, you just have to climb the ramparts, which are accessible from a staircase in front of the museum entrance.
