Papaïchton, the historic capital of Boni country, founded in 1969, has about 6,500 inhabitants. Although only accessible by pirogue, its proximity to Maripasoula has allowed Papaïchton to develop more rapidly than Grand-Santi. The city is currently experiencing strong demographic growth. It contains many symbolic places for the Aluku community, as well as the villages Cottica and Boniville. Its inhabitants still practice the traditional Tembé art. Several pirogue cab companies provide connections between Papaïchton and Maripasoula. It takes 45 minutes and about 20 € for the one-way trip (cash only)
