Maripasoula marks the territorial boundary between the Black Maroon populations (Ndjuka and Boni) and the Amerindian populations, in particular the Wayana. This commune was created as part of the departmentalization process in 1969. The town of Maripasoula developed at the end of the 19th century with the arrival of gold diggers, essentially Creole Saint Lucians. Today, 12,000 inhabitants, black maroons, Creoles, Amerindians, metropolitans and Brazilians are counted there. The commune remains relatively isolated, since access is only by pirogue or by plane. It thus preserves its authenticity and its atmosphere of the end of the world.
