Perched in the hamlet of Sollières-Sardières, the Musée d'Archéologie et de Préhistoire (grotte des Balmes) takes you back in time to around 5600 years ago, to tell the story of how the first farmers-breeders of the Neolithic period lived in the high mountains. Pottery, handicrafts, furniture, reconstructed dwellings and everyday objects testify to the strong bond between these people and their natural environment. A must-see cultural stopover to understand life in the past in the Maurienne, far from the summits but as close as possible to its origins.
