A strong remnant of the Second World War, dating from 1933, a defense system for the railroads and the national road.
Overlooking Modane, Fort de Saint-Gobain is part of the Maginot Line of the Alps, built between 1933 and 1939 to watch over the road and railroad to Italy. Comprising five blocks linked by 250 m of underground galleries, it could house 150 soldiers in total autonomy. Now open to visitors, it can be explored along a signposted route. The fresh, unspoilt atmosphere plunges you into the military life of the 1930s. An unforgettable stopover, between memory and heritage, in the heart of the Maurienne mountains.
