The Villerest dam, near the roannaise city, is located in the territory of the municipalities of Villerest and Commelle-Vernay. Its holdback extends over 770 ha, from Balbigny upstream to Villerest downstream. This book was carried out within the framework of the programme for the hydraulic development of the Loire Basin initiated in 1974 by the Comité de Bassin Loire-Bretagne.
