SANRUF TEMPLE
The first protestant temple of Valence, housing the tomb of Jean-Etienne Championnet.
The Saint-Ruf temple, a former Catholic church, has a beautiful set of 18th century decorations. Saint Ruf was one of the founders of the Christian community of Avignon, a religious order transferred to Valence where a huge abbey was built outside the city, destroyed during the wars of religion by Protestant troops. The religious then settled in the city. During the Revolution, their church was transformed into a wheat store and then dedicated to the revolutionary assemblies. In the 19th century, Bonaparte entrusted the church to the Protestant community. It is the first Protestant temple in Valencia. It houses the tomb of Jean-Etienne Championnet, general of the troops of the Revolution.
