Things to see and do Vaison-La-Romaine

Vaison-la-Romaine is an indispensable site of the Upper Vaucluse  : a historic city of greatest archaeological interest built in a beautiful green setting. The ancient theatre, the sanctuary at the Porticos, the house with the Apollo… the city brings together a multitude of ancient relics that can be visited. The medieval era also left its mark, through its cathedral and cloister dating from the th century. You will enjoy walking on these typical Mediterranean streets. Since 1992, and the spectacular flood of the river crossing it, the city has been renovated. Departing from Place Montfort, which has been Place du Marché since 1817, this little train will take you through 2,000 years of history in around three-quarters of an hour. First, we head for the 14-hectare Gallo-Roman city, through the sites of Puymin and La Villasse, where gigantic villas alternate with temples, sanctuaries and an ancient theater... Then, holding your breath, you'll cross the elegant Roman bridge over the Ouvèze to reach the upper town, dominated by its belfry. This part of the town flourished in medieval times. Wander around the castle, the ^12th-century cloister adjoining the cathedral and the Saint-Quentin chapel. Finally, we return to reality in the lively streets of the Provencal village.

This theater was built in the ^1st century AD. Proof of this is the marble statue of Tiberius found in front of the royal gate. It has, of course, been protected as a historical monument since 1862. It's one of the few public buildings in the city that still retains the splendor of Roman times. Imagine, all along the stage wall, imperial statues and divinities facing over 6,000 spectators! Mimes and pantomimes were performed in the Roman style. Now restored, it hosts numerous shows as part of the Vaison Festivals, the International Dance Festival, the Choralies... there's no shortage of events.
