THE ROMAN ARC
The Arc Marius is a preserved Roman jewel that sits at the foot of Cavaillon's Saint-Jacques hill.
One of the town's oldest monuments. The only vestige of Roman domination, this ancient arch - affectionately called "Arc Marius" by Cavaillonnais - dates from the 1st century. Designed to honor the Roman conquest, it consists of two arches supported by four pillars. Once part of the former episcopal palace (sold in 1793 and destroyed a few decades later), it was moved stone by stone to its present location in 1880. The tourist office organizes tours of the town's monuments.
