SAINTE-MARIE-MADELEINE MONASTERY
Nuns organizing retreats or training sessions, with camping space and an altar
In 1206, St. Dominic founded the nuns at Prouilhe, near Toulouse, in Cathar country. In 1860, this Dominican community moved to Marseille to serve the incurably ill and the infirm abandoned by all. The Saint-Maximin monastery was created in 1972 from the Sainte-Catherine work. In 2009, the monastery moved to the hill of Deffends, an unspoilt spot in the town of Saint-Maximin, 400 m above sea level. Its location offers retreatants a view and atmosphere conducive to rest and contemplation, changing with the seasons. The nuns offer those who wish to share their life of prayer and contemplation for a few days. The nuns are open to all, for individual stays or organized groups, for retreats or training sessions. The sisters also welcome young women reflecting on their vocation. Please note that only pilgrims on the Way of St. Mary Magdalene are welcomed here, as pilgrims on the Way of St. James have another place of welcome in Saint-Maximin. Pilgrims can be welcomed by the day, or for stays of 2 to 8 days. In addition to accommodation and catering, guests have access to prayer rooms, conference rooms and a library. For guides and scouts, a camping area is available, as well as an altar for open-air celebrations.
