Abbaye de la Celle is a listed historical monument with a church with a single nave, in the Romanesque style of Provence.
After a lengthy restoration, La Celle Abbey reopened in May 2021! Tucked away in the heart of the Provencal village of La Celle, this medieval abbey, listed as a historic monument, will captivate you with its Romanesque architecture and history. But before it was the abbey we admire today, excavations revealed the presence of a Roman agricultural villa, specialized in wine production. In 1011, the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille was given a church near Brignoles. The monks settled there, founded a male priory and then built a major female monastery, the Abbey of La Celle. The "primitive" monastery is not what we see today. Excavations have revealed numerous re-uses of the foundations of the Roman villa. Construction of the second monastery began in the late 12th century. These are the buildings visible today during your visit. Of particular note is the impressive courtyard, surrounded by a cloister of four vaulted galleries. The church is a perfect example of Provençal Romanesque architecture, with its single nave. For over 500 years, the monastery was home to Benedictine nuns from the great families of Provence and Languedoc. In the 17th century, a laxity in respecting the rules of Saint-Benoît led to the nuns being sanctioned and transferred to a convent in Aix-en-Provence, by Mazarin himself. In 1990, the commune of La Celle acquired the abbey and launched restoration work, with the support of the département.
