A Gallo-Roman amphitheater that has benefited from major restoration work, enhancing its vocation as a performance venue.
Built of green sandstone from the Estérel massif outside the ramparts, this is one of the oldest amphitheaters in Gaul. Built around the 1st century AD, it could hold 12,000 spectators, compared with 5,000 today. In the center, an arena-shaped pit was used for gladiator fights and wild animal hunts. Substantial restoration and consolidation work has restored the arena to its former glory.
