The Jardin Emile Duclaux, also known as the Jardin du Pharo, offers a breathtaking view of the Vieux Port, the Cathedral of the Major, the Mucem and the open sea. Louis Napoleon Bonaparte fell in love with the place during a stay in the Phocaean city in 1852. He had the Pharo's palace built there, whose first stone was laid in 1858. A residence that neither the Prince, now Napoleon III, nor the Empress should ever live in. Bequeathed to the city of Marseille, the residence was transformed in 1905 into a medical school and it was only a few years later that it was opened to the public. Today, the Palais de Pharo hosts various municipal services and is an international reception area with its auditorium and a catering area for conferences and various events. The six-hectare garden surrounding it has become one of Marseille's favorites with its stone bench overlooking the sea and the entire city. A place that combines different spaces for children with games, rides and green lawns, as well as for the older ones because each visit will be an opportunity to take a good breath of fresh air, picnic, enjoy the refreshment bar, or its chalet - this restaurant in the park where lunch or dinner can be enjoyed in complete peace and quiet.
