Saint Nicholas Fortress was built between 1660 and 1664 in record time. Following a series of revolts, King Louis XIV ordered the construction of the citadel to ensure the supervision of the city, but also his defence. During the Revolution, the fort is abused by revolutionaries who degrade a party. It was in 1860 that the fort was separated into two by the construction of a new boulevard named Charles-Livon, linking the Old port to the Pharo. So the side side is named Fort Ganteaume, on the other side, the high fort bears the name Entrecasteaux. Today only part of the fort is open to the public. The opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the port. Fort Saint-Nicolas has been classified as a historic heritage since 1969.
