FORT ST. NICHOLAS
Take a must-see tour of the Saint-Nicolas fortress, a historic landmark with a panoramic view of the city and harbor
The Saint-Nicolas fortress was built between 1660 and 1664 in record time. Following a series of revolts, King Louis XIV ordered the construction of the citadel to ensure the city's surveillance and defense. During the French Revolution, the fort was badly damaged by the revolutionaries, who damaged part of it. In 1860, the fort was split in two by the construction of a new boulevard named Charles-Livon, linking the Vieux-Port to the Pharo. In 2024, the citadel reopened to the public with great fanfare, and is now open to the public.
