Palace with a remarkable park equipped with playgrounds in Marseille, a place of walk and entertainment to discover with the family

The Longchamp park is what can be considered the green lung of central Marseille. It was laid out around the famous Longchamp Palace, built according to the plans of the architect Henri Espérandieu (who also designed the basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde) and inaugurated with great pomp in 1869 to celebrate the arrival of the waters of the Durance River in Marseille, synonymous with running water in the city. From then on, the place became a place for strolling and entertainment. The zoological garden, created before the palace in 1856, allowed many Marseilles children to discover animals from the other side of the world, other than through imagery. The zoo closed its doors in 1987 and the garden became public the following year. Stroll through the alleys and enjoy the shady areas in summer. Renovation work carried out in 2013 has restored the gardens to their former glory, although the lawns now lack maintenance. The bandstand has been revamped and hosts outdoor concerts during the summer. The giraffe pavilion, with its oriental aspect, takes you for a few seconds to the other side of the Mediterranean. Life-size, fibreglass animals have taken their place in the old zoo structures. This is an outing that young and old alike will enjoy, especially for the few playgrounds, rides and pony rides on offer. Once a year, the Five Continents Jazz Festival is held here, which sees many international stars thrilling the park.
