The famous Old Port redeveloped, with a giant sunshade offering a larger, more original opening onto the waterfront.

The beating heart of Marseille, the Vieux-Port is the nerve center of the city, and has been ever since it was founded. According to legend, it was here that the Greeks of Phocaea landed in the Lacydon cove and founded Massalia on the north shore (a plaque on the ground facing the Canebière). People come here to buy fish in the morning when the fishermen set up their typical market, to stroll around, take selfies with friends, take the shuttle to Frioul, treat themselves to a cruise to the Calanques and eat ice cream with the family. Since 2013, its metamorphosis has made the area more human, with more space for pedestrians and a Norman Foster-designed shade canopy, a welcome sight in midsummer. The Old Port offers a magnificent setting that's a must-see during your stay. As you face the port, take time to appreciate the deep panorama, with the Bonne Mère on your left and the Panier district on your right. It's highly recommended that you take the time to walk around it to appreciate the monuments (the town hall, the church of Saint-Ferréol les Augustins, La Criée...). The less adventurous will opt for the ferryboat to cut the distance in half. There are many fine vantage points overlooking the port, including Fort Saint-Jean and the belvedere in front of Saint-Laurent church. Numerous stores and restaurants.
